About Us
Founded in 1912, the Sri Lanka Natural History Society (SLNHS) has remained an active, albeit small Society with a core membership of enthusiasts and professionals in nature conservation. Some eminent past Secretaries of the Society include the author/ illustrator G.M. Henry, W.W.A Philips etc.
Vision :
The preservation and protection of Sri Lankan natural history for the benefit of future generations.
Mission :
By promoting study and disseminating knowledge of natural history and advocating a culture that appreciates and conserves natural resources.
Strategies:
- Creating awareness of Sri Lanka’s Diverse natural history and resources through lectures, field visits, and dissemination of published work, among youth.
- Encourage the study of Sri Lanka’s natural history and conservation of nature through assistance to research efforts by field observation and recording sightings on a database.
- Provide a space for sharing knowledge, appreciation of natural history and the conservation of natural resources
The SLNHS organizes a varied program of lectures and slide presentations for its members. The subject matter of the talks embraces all fields of Natural History including marine life, birds, environmental issues and the recording thereof via photography etc. They organize field excursions regularly. Excursions include day trips as well as longer excursions with one or more overnight stays.
